Credit union achieves ‘cyber resilience’ during digital transformation

Cybersecurity is a priority issue for companies of all sizes as they transform their businesses for the digital age. While the scope of attacks at large enterprises like Uber Technologies Inc., National Health Service and others have garnered media, businesses of all sizes are seeking data protection solutions to protect themselves and customers.

“Big or small, you expect the same cyber resilience, protection for your personal information. … We had to find a solution quickly, and we looked to Dell EMC for data protection and cyber recovery,” said  Bob Bender (pictured, right), chief technology officer at Founders Federal Credit Union. A regional financial institution servicing around 210,000 members, Founders looked to Dell EMC for a lift in the cyber resilience of its data.

Bender and Alex Almeida (pictured, left), consultant, product marketing, at Dell EMC, spoke with John Walls (@JohnWalls21), hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host Keith Townsend (@CTOAdvisor), at the Dell Technologies World event in Las Vegas. They discussed the cybersecurity needs for businesses of all sizes, and how Dell EMC is supporting the credit union’s data protection efforts. (* Disclosure below.)

Emphasizing data recovery

Prior to partnering with Dell EMC, Founders lacked the ability to bring all of its various data security issues under unified governance. The credit union needed to isolate its critical data and move it off network to ensure protection in the event of even the most impactful breach.

“We saw that our tape media backup recovery was not going to recover for the events that were happening. … Today, they’re locking 500, 1,500 servers in a matter of minutes,” Bender said.

Bender and his team needed a system that could stand up very quickly, as the company’s data was constantly at risk of breach. Dell EMC used its Data Domain, Avamar, DD Boost and Data Protection Advisor solutions to get Founders results fast and give Bender data insights he could access in real time from anywhere.

Dell’s focus on recovery over preventive care in its solution enables Founders to maintain constant protection, even in the case of a breach. “The isolation piece of the solution is really where the value comes in. Not only is it to get a clean copy of the data, but you can use that for analysis … to detect early-on problems that may be happening in your production environment,” Almeida said.

The integration of disparate units, improved insights, and backup has given Bender greater business confidence to share with his board and customers. “I’m getting more creative ideas. That means … we’re back as a business solving problems, not worrying if our backups are done at two in the morning,” he concluded.
