Iconiq Capital leads $50M round into cloud communications startup Dialpad

Cloud-based communications startup Dialpad Inc. today announced that it has closed a $50 million funding round led by Iconiq Capital, a venture fund that counts Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey as clients.

Returning backer Andreessen Horowitz chipped in as well. The investment likely will help boost Dialpad’s already fast growth trajectory. The startup offers a trio of cloud-based communications services that collectively have more than 50,000 customers, including Uber Technologies Inc. and other tech giants.

Dialpad’s flagship product is its namesake “business phone system.” The service enables users to communicate via voice, video and chat as well as host conference calls for larger meetings. This core feature set is paired with an extensive array of value-added capabilities designed to streamline conversations.

Dialpad’s two other products are more specialized. The first, UberConference, focuses on voice meetings, while the other is a platform called Call Center that’s geared toward customer support teams.

All three products received a boost earlier this year after Dialpad acquired TalkIQ Inc., a fellow startup focused on artificial intelligence. It turned the assets from the acquisition into new features that can take notes about a call and remind salespeople of key details like product prices while they’re talking with a prospect. Dialpad Call Center, in turn, got a sentiment analysis tool for measuring customer satisfaction.

As part of the TalkIQ acquisition, Dialpad appointed the startup’s chief executive officer, Dan O’Connell (pictured, right, with Dialpad founder Craig Walker), as head of its voice AI operation. This makes it safe to assume that AI will continue to play a part in the startup’s growth strategy following the new $50 million investment. But in today’s funding announcement, Dialpad put the main emphasis on business expansion.

The startup plans to grow its current headcount by 100 to 350 employees, as well as open new branches in Singapore and Pleasanton, California. The expansion is set to bring the total number of offices that Dialpad maintains worldwide to 10.

Dialpad has raised $120 million in funding to date.
