With Auto SDK, Amazon doubles down on its Alexa everywhere strategy

Amazon.com Inc. has doubled down on its Alexa everywhere strategy by releasing an auto software development kit today that will allow vehicle manufacturers to add Alexa to their cars and trucks.

The Alexa Auto SDK is claimed to simplify the integration of Alexa into in-vehicle “infotainment systems,” a term that describes smart stereos, facilitating automotive-specific functionality that “contextualizes the experience for the vehicle.”

The SDK includes source code and function libraries in C++ and Java that enable a vehicle to process audio inputs and triggers, establish a connection with Alexa and handle all Alexa interactions. In simple English, it allows users to talk to the smart stereo and get results.

In addition, the SDK includes sample applications, build scripts, sequence diagrams and documentation that supports Android and QNX operating systems on ARM and x86 processor architectures.

“At Amazon, we believe voice is the best way to interact with devices in nearly every setting,” Adam Foster, a senior Alexa product marketing manager, wrote in a blog post Thursday. “Our vision has always been for Alexa to be at your side, ready to help when you need it. We’ve already seen Alexa make customers’ lives more convenient and more productive at home and at work, and we’re excited to expand those capabilities so customers never have walk out the door without her.”

The SDK supports streaming media from Amazon Music, iHeartRadio and Audible but notably not Spotify, although that may change in the future. Those driving cars with Alexa installed are able to place calls verbally as well as bring up turn-by-turn navigation.

Like Amazon’s Echo home devices, the Alexa integration facilitates search queries for restaurants, movie theaters, grocery stores, hotels and other businesses.

In what has primarily become a two-horse race between Android Auto and Apple Inc.’s CarPlay when it comes to smart car stereos, Amazon is trying to get a slice of the market and isn’t doing too badly. Toyota Motor Corp. is said to be building Alexa into its Entune 3.0 infotainment system that will be featured in new vehicles, while Panasonic Corp., Anker Innovations Ltd. and Garmin Ltd. are also creating aftermarket devices that can be installed in older vehicles.
