Cybersecurity services and investigation firm Nisos raises $6M

Cybersecurity services and investigation firm Nisos Inc. has raised slightly over $6 million in new funding from Columbia Capital.

As part of the deal, Jason Booma, a partner at Columbia, has joined Nisos’ board along with David Northington, most recently a managing director at Accenture.

Nisos was founded in 2015 by former U.S. government intelligence operators. Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Justin Zeefe worked for a decade in intel collecting information on state and nonstate cyberactors, industrial control systems, advanced threat capabilities and intentions, illicit financial and supply chain networks, and state-sponsored or -sanctioned activity.

Nisos offers what it called an “active defense” solution, which includes advanced threat hunting and attack methodologies, the use of deception technologies to confuse attackers and elite intelligence collection and analysis techniques.

In its own words, Nisos leverages “the attacker’s tactics, technologies and procedures back against them.” Differentiating itself from other companies that rely on technology alone, Nisos also uses human intelligence, the advantage of its founders and employees coming from the intelligence community.

Perhaps not surprising given this is a company run by former spooks, Nisos does not reveal the identities of its clients. But it noted that they are typically Fortune 1000 companies that “recognize the ever-growing risk presented by sophisticated malicious actors operating unchecked against the private sector.”

Nisos is headquartered Alexandria, Virginia, with offices in Brooklyn, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

“Over the last two years, Nisos has architected a scalable and secure technology platform through which we deliver our services and build client capabilities,” Zeefe said in a statement. “This investment will allow Nisos to develop technology and scale our expertise at a faster pace, thus providing ever-increasing levels of threat protection and adaptation to the evolving threat landscape.”
