Pure Storage acquires file storage provider Compuverde
Six months after picking up StorReduce Inc. to gain a bigger presence in the backup market, Pure Storage Inc. has made another strategic acquisition to extend its capabilities.
The company on Tuesday announced that it’s buying Compuverde AB, a Sweden-based provider of file storage software. The firm’s flagship Compuverde vNAS platform enables enterprises to organize their data in files and folders much like how it’s done on consumer devices. The difference is that, naturally, the platform can handle far more information, providing the ability to create storage environments with hundreds of servers.
A single Compuverde vNAS deployment is capable of storing anywhere from a terabyte of data to several petabytes or more. The software provides a fairly broad array of administrative features to help enterprises manage their information, including tools for protecting against outages. Compuverde vNAS can automatically take action if one of the servers in a deployment goes down and allows companies to back up their data to the cloud.
The software is a valuable pickup for Pure Storage. The file-based storage capabilities Compuverde brings to the table will help round out the company’s all-flash systems, which are mainly designed to store information as blocks — small, versatile chunks of data — or as objects.
Pure Storage plans to incorporate the technology into two products in particular. Chadd Kenney, the company’s vice president of products and solutions, told CRN that Compuverde vNAS will be integrated into the Flash//X array series it introduced back in 2017 and the FlashBlade system, which is designed for storing unstructured data such as video.
Pure Storage expects to complete the acquisition of Compuverde by the end of the month. The financial terms were not disclosed.
The flash array maker isn’t the only major player in the enterprise technology market that’s working to expand its file storage capabilities. Just this week, Google LLC teamed up with Elastifile Ltd. to make the latter firm’s file storage technology available on its cloud platform. The companies are targeting three main use cases: video rendering, SAP SE applications and software containers.
