Google teases a Pixel event for May 7, likely to debut new phones

Google LLC today released a teaser on the Google Store for an event May 7 that’s expected to see the launch of a new range of midlevel Pixel phones.

The teaser itself reads, “Help is on the way,” before adding “On May 7, something big is coming to the Pixel universe.” Following a link to a Marvel Avengers-themed video promoting a tie-up announced last week, the teaser says that “the power is in your hands” and pitches a sign-up for updates about the May announcement.

Something big in this case may actually be something small in price. Reports and even the odd leak suggest Google is about to announce the midrange Pixel 3a Series. The series is believed to consist of two phones.

The smaller of the two at 5.6 inches, the Pixel 3a will likely be powered by a Snapdragon 670 coupled with 4 gigabytes of memory, a 2915-milliamp-hour battery, a 12-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera.

The Pixel 3a XL is reported to be 6 inches with possibly a Qualcomm 710 under the hood instead of a 670, but that’s depending on which report is to be believed. Like the smaller version, the 3a XL is also expected to offer 4GB of memory with 12- and 8-megapixel rear and front cameras. Both phones will have OLED screens, with reports suggesting that one of them may have a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack.

There is some speculation that the phones may be offered in a purple or “iris” color per the color used in the announcement.

pixel3aThe most important part of the announcement will likely be the price the phones sell for: possibly under $600 or even between $400 and $500. Google hasn’t sold a midrange phone below $600 since it ceased selling Nexus phones in 2016.

The phones will compete directly with Apple Inc.’s iPhone XR and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.’s Galaxy S10e, both lower-cost versions of the flagship phones sold by both companies.

The news comes as a new report has found that Google’s phones have been finding increasing popularity in some countries. A new study from Counterpoint Research found that Google phones are now the third most popular phones in North America behind Apple and Samsung, while Google phones came in at fifth place in Western Europe.
