With new data protection products, Dell EMC seeks to put customers on path to power

Among the many announcements from Dell Technologies Inc. this week was the introduction of the Dell EMC PowerProtect Software platform and Dell EMC PowerProtect X400 multi-dimensional appliance. The news was part of Dell EMC’s interest in cementing its role in data protection management well into the foreseeable future.

“We’re at this pivot point where we’re building on this legacy of trust and IP and knowledge and experience that we have, but we’re now setting the foundation to be number one in data protection and data management for the next 10 years,” said Beth Phalen (pictured, left), president and general manager of the Data Protection Division at Dell EMC. “It’s about introducing this new set of products where we bring our customers forward. We call it the ‘path to power.’”

Phalen spoke with Lisa Martin (@LisaMartinTV) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the Dell Tech World event in Las Vegas. She was joined by Sharad Rastogi (pictured, right), senior vice president of product management at Dell EMC, and they discussed a focus on helping customers generate value from data and the challenge of protecting the managed infrastructure (see the full interview with transcript here). Data availability and value

Putting customers on their path to power means not just having visibility across the entire infrastructure and being able to move data between targeted environments. The key is being able to generate value, and that also means availability.

“Probably the most important is getting value from the data, how to not only protect it, but make it available at the right time, right place for the right application and be able to use it,” Rastogi said. “Data is the fuel of the modern digital economy, and making it available is really critical.”

During the Dell event in Las Vegas, executives spoke of the need for a protected managed infrastructure, an important ingredient as information technology professionals seek a simpler way to control an increasingly complex hybrid cloud ecosystem.

“Protected managed infrastructure means that you have confidence it’s protected and that you’re not just dealing with all of these pieces and parts, but you can think of it as a managed whole,” Phalen said. “With PowerProtect, we’re helping combine self-service with centralized governance. We’re really making it as easy as possible for the businesses within our customers to protect and manage their data.”
