View 5.1 Gets a Boost with ILIO, VMware to Improve Cloud Suite
The latest version of View came out just last week, and already one partner has updated its own offering to support v5.1, and provided some additional supplemental features.
Atlantis Computing makes software that takes disk-based storage out of the virtual desktop equation. Its ILIO Diskless VDI tool works alongside the VMware View Storage Accelerator to offload I/O from traffic to another system: user data is transferred to a file share, network-based storage or even a blade or rack server depending on the deployment, and images are reduced in size to roughly 500 megabytes each. This size cut helps streamline the overall process, and is made possible thanks to the new features that ILIO 3.2 introduces.
The latest release packs more advanced compression capabilities and integration with ILIO Fast Cloning, which facilitates the cloning of a single virtual desktop in about five seconds. Both View and XenDesktop are supported.
Getting back to the former, the latest edition introduced a few new features as well, including integration with a few other VMware applications. And we can expect that in the next update to the virtualization giant’s cloud lineup, according to CTO Steve Herrod.
The Register picked up a quote from an interview with Herrod in which he said that the Cloud Infrastructure Suite is too fragmented at the moment. He put the blame on the fact that a great portion of the suite breaks down to apps from an assortment of different companies VMware acquired at one time or another, and they have not been properly integrated yet.
He also revealed that this issue will be fixed in the near future.
“It is not a perfect analogy … but you will see in our next release that all the products tie very closely together. They will be sold together. They will have the same installation process. The idea will be that every one of the products has to work much better together and you will see a number of announcements coming out around that.”
