Pinterest to Launch Android App at Google I/O 2012?
Google I/O, the annual developers conference by Google held at San Francisco, CA, is all set for June 27-29 at the Moscone Center. You can catch the live stream here.
So what are we to expect at the event? Well, for starters, you can expect a Pinterest app to be unveiled.
Pinterest for Android
Australian site, Ausdroid, was the first to notice in the recently released Google I/O app that Pinterest would be attending the conference. Careful inspection revealed that Carl Rice, Mobile Engineer for Pinterest, and Cynthia Maxwell, Chief Officer of Awesome and Senior Software Engineer, would be the exhibitors for Pinterest at the event.
The Pinterest app indicated that it was now available on Google Play but upon checking, one cannot find the said app. It looks like Pinterest could be launching the app during the conference, making it available on Google Play just moments after an announcement.
One Pinterest user asked a question on Pinterest as to whether he can “install the Pin It bookmarklet on an Android device,” and Pinterest answered his query with this:
“Right now you can’t install the Pin It bookmarklet on an Android device, but you can use our mobile site at: http://m.pinterest.com We’re working on a dedicated Android app. We know lots of folks are eager to see one, so when we feel we’re in the final stages of its development, we’ll be sure to share more information.”
So it looks like Pinterest may soon have an Android app available for users.
Pinterest for Mobile
Pinterest for Android is not their first venture into the mobile realm. In March 2011, a year after Pinterest’s launch, they brought the Pinterest for iPhone apps for their mobile users. Since not everyone is an iPhone user, the company launched Pinterest Mobile in September 2011. And in May 2012, Pinterest updated their iPhone app and now an iPad app is in development.
Mobile is a key sticking point for Pinterest as it will need to constantly expand its audience and take in new business opportunities through mobile applications and interfaces. They’re also facing rising competition from other image-centric curation networks like Fancy, which has a well-defined mobile strategy across iOS and Android. One thing that will really drive mobile activity for Pinterest is a bookmarlet for mobile browsers, as Springpad and Evernote have done for their users.
