Popular cloud storage service Box has not had many nice things to say about Microsoft or its popular Sharepoint platform. However, it seems Box likes the company enough to add support for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7. The competition in the cloud storage space is enormous. If Box wants to come out on top, the company has to make its solution available on as many platforms as possible. It seems Windows Phone 7 is part of that equation.

Box’s solution has long been touted as a viable and easier to use alternative to SharePoint, Microsoft’s enterprise collaboration software.  Box is used by companies such as DirecTV, LinkedIn and EMC, but more vendors are entering the cloud storage space, which means Box has to continue innovate and target the widest user base possible if it wants to excel. Betting that Microsoft’s mobile user base will expand is likely a safe bet. Microsoft made a name for itself on the desktop, and now it’s putting its full weight behind it mobile play.

Simon Tad, Box’s product manager of mobile, disclosed a few additional details about the update in a blog post saying,

“We designed our app to really take advantage of this platform’s unique characteristics and capabilities. You can pivot between files, updates and collaborators, start slideshows for images just like in the Pictures Hub and even pin Live Tiles to your Start screen to see when colleagues leave updates on Box.”

Tad says international versions of the application will also be available in more than eight languages including French, Italian, German, Spanish and Chinese.  He also made a revelation that shows exactly how aggressive Box is with its plans to expand. The company is collaborating with Qualcomm to preinstall Box on select devices that run on its Snapdragon processor.

Cloud storage providers aren’t Box’s only competition. Enterprise vendors are adding features to their platform that infringe on Box’s space. For example, SpringCM introduced its new Business Sync platform this week. SpringCM is promoting the new features as “truly enterprise-ready file collaboration.”  Business Sync comes with a full set of control options including document wipes, advanced permissions and role based security that differentiate from platform’s like Box that SpringCM says are more consumer oriented.
