New Google Maps Sign-up Page Makes a Brief Appearance Before I/O
Google I/O 2013 officially kicks off today and the hype around the event is so high that Google’s shares rose above $900, peaking at $907.40 this morning.
People just cannot get enough of all the rumors and the leaks, but the most interesting snippet we’ve seen so far was when the new Google Maps sign-up page briefly went live last night.
It was quickly taken down – but clearly not quick enough, as some people were able to grab screenshots of the new sign-up page and post them on the web. But what’s so exciting about the sign-up page? It proves that a new and improved Google Maps is coming and that last week’s leaked images are all true.
So what are we to expect from the new Google Maps?
It’s all about the Maps
The most notable change is that the chunky old sidebar has finally been done away with, while Google boasts of a “tailored map” for every search and click you make. The map will now cover the whole page and will feature a smarter search box that delivers information such as the destination you searched for, ratings, reviews and in some cases, views of the interior of certain establishments via Google’s indoor mapping. The smart search bar is reminiscent of Google Now, it aims to deliver all the information you need at a glance.
All in one place
Google Earth, flight search and transportation information have all been incorporated in the new Google Maps. You can easily shift from one view to another with just one click. Google Earth lets you explore the world at every conceivable angle to get a better perspective of your destination. With flight search integrated, you can search for flight options, ticket prices and even get an estimated travel time so you can better plan your trip or make adjustments in case of any delays. In addition, the the transportation information provides you with the best possible route – either the cheapest way to get there or the fastest.

The leaked images also showed Google claiming that Maps will get better the more you use it. And if people use it more, and start leaving more reviews or ratings for different destinations, then it becomes more helpful for other people. You benefit from Google Maps and as more people use it, the service gets better, and Google benefits from it.
