LIVE: Is Bitcoin Doomed? Feds Use Search Warrant to Seize Mt. Gox Account
On today’s SiliconANGLE Live NewsDesk Show, (see embed feed below or visit youtube.com/siliconangle to watch on-demand), we discuss how The Department of Homeland Security is investigating Mt. Gox, the largest Bitcoin exchange.
The Feds are investigating into whether Mt. Gox is violating laws on U.S. money exchange and money transfers — and in the process of that investigation the Feds are confiscating the exchange’s money. The federal search warrant was used yesterday to seize funds that Mt. Gox had in Dwolla, a money transfer service. In the warrant, a special agent with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), states that there’s probable cause to believe Mt. Gox is engaging in “money transmitting” without a license, a crime punishable by a fine or up to five years in prison.
Joining us now to tell us more about DHS’s investigation into Mt. Gox is SiliconANGLE Founding Editor Mark ‘Rizzn’ Hopkins. (See the live broadcast, embed below ~ if you missed today’s topic, check our YouTube channel for archived clips.)
Some of the things we’ll be discussing with Hopkins include, the merits for the Department of Homeland Security’s investigation, the smoking gun according to the DHS, whether Bitcoin’s success depend on Mt. Gox, and lastly — is Mt. Gox guilty?
