Butterfly Labs, Bitcoin, Miner Units

Updated with full video, see below.

On today’s SiliconANGLE Live NewsDesk Show, (see embed feed below or visit youtube.com/siliconangle to watch on-demand), we learn that Butterfly Labs has finally begun to ship its long awaited ASIC Bitcoin Miners.

Imagine being told about something great that you want, and then told about delay after delay on a pre-order you made some 10 months ago. That’s the messy story of Butterfly Labs over the last year. Originally, it had promised four different equipment configurations:

  • 5 GH/s Bitcoin Miner – Jalapeno
  • 25 GH/s Bitcoin Miner – “Little Single”
  • 50 GH/S Bitcoin Miner – “Single”
  • 1,500 GH/s Bitcoin Miner – Mini Rig

For a reference point, Butterfly Labs said that the the Jalapeno was a coffee coaster-sized unit that would be powered via a USB port. In a release last September Butterfly Labs said that customers could expect 1 watt per Ghash/sec on all products.

Joining us now to tell us more about these ASIC Bitcoin Miners is SiliconANGLE Founding Editor Mark ‘Rizzn’ Hopkins. (See the live broadcast, embed below ~ if you missed today’s topic, check our YouTube channel for archived clips.)

Some of the things we’ll be discussing with Hopkins include, the repeated delays, what ASIC Bitcoin Miner devices are and how they work, the impact on Bitcoin as a currency, the amount of refund requests, the pricing of gear like this and the fate of Butterfly Labs.
