Samsung Galaxy S4 Surpasses 10M Sales In One Month

Samsung proudly announced on its official blog that sales of the Galaxy S4 has surpassed the 10 million mark in less than a month after it was released in 60 countries last April 27.

The Galaxy S4 sets a new record for the Galaxy line as its predecessor, the Galaxy SIII, wasn’t able to surpass the 10M mark until 50 days after its release, while the SI and SII took seven and five months to reach the same stature.

“On behalf of Samsung, I would like to thank the millions of customers around the world who have chosen the Samsung Galaxy S4. At Samsung, we’ll continue to pursue innovation inspired by and for people,” announced Samsung CEO and President of IT & Mobile Communications, JK Shin.

The number posted by Samsung is very impressive.  If you do the math, you’d come to the conclusion that Samsung sold around four Galaxy S4’s per second – that’s an awful lot of phones by anyone’s estimation, certainly a company like HTC.  But there’s a catch, the sales Samsung refers to are the ones that go through its global channel, which includes sales to retailers and wireless operators, not to actual consumers.  Technically, Samsung shipped more than 10 million units of the Galaxy S4 with no assurance that all of them have actually been sold to real, living people. It’s more than possible that as many as half of these units could just be sitting on store shelves, waiting for people to buy them.  Compared to its fierce rival, Apple, which sold 5 million units of the iPhone 5 on its first weekend of sales, the Galaxy S4 sales are still somewhat over shadowed.

Samsung has long been plagued with the issue of shipped vs. sold and the figures it released today once again suggest that the South Korean giant is just keen to throw out some big numbers to impress investors and pique interest in its device.

A splash of color

Samsung also took the opportunity to reveal that the Galaxy S4 will soon be coming to more countries.  It’s currently available in 110 countries and will soon be available in 45 more, with the cooperation of 327 partners.

Aside from rolling out to more countries, the Galaxy S4 will soon be available in more colors too, including such relaxing shades as ‘Blue Arctic’ and ‘Red Aurora’, both of which will be released this summer, followed by ‘Purple Mirage’ and ‘Brown Autumn’ later in the year.
