HP Vertica Analytics Platform Makes Patient Data More Accessible for Physicians
Hewlett Packard has relea
sed a new use case that details how healthcare IT specialist Cerner leverages the Vertica Analytics Platform to improve service levels and make data more accessible for physicians.
According to HP, Cerner has realized a 100x performance increase by replacing its legacy data warehousing system with Vertica’s software. This added horsepower enables the company to provide customers with up-to-date system health data and patient information much faster than before. It also helped Cerner enhance its Health Facts platform, which now enables hospitals to improve patient care by drawing insights from machine data generated by health systems.
Interestingly, the company is using Vertica in-house to aggregate and process more than 10 billion “Response Time Measurement System” timers per month. These data snippets allow Cernet to optimize its software and develop educational material based on usage trends.
“The HP Vertica Analytics Platform delivers the speed and massive scalability we need to meet the demanding performance standards we have for our healthcare provider solutions,” said Bill Graff, a senior vice president at Cerner. “With our continued success with HP, and the announcement of their HAVEn platform, we have the confidence to expand our usage of HP’s big data portfolio into a number of new projects without worrying about the platform performance or stability.”
The Big Data revolution is disrupting healthcare IT, and introducing new challenges in the process. Michael Nix, the Director of Analytics at the James M. Jeffords Institute for Quality and Operational Effectiveness, stressed in a recent interview on theCube that healthcare organizations must overcome their structural obstacles before making analytics a part of their corporate culture. He also emphasized the importance of data quality, which he said is key to improving patient care.
