Best of theCUBE : Learning from powerful women in tech
Women in the workforce, especially the tech sector, are often judged for not being able to make the cut, without being given a chance to prove themselves. But that hasn’t stopped women from achieving great things in tech despite these obstacles, and SiliconANGLE is honoring those women this week with a special playlist on our TV channel.

The tech takeover
Throughout history, women have proven that they can hack it in male-dominated societies. From Sacagawea who acted as guide and interpreter in Lewis and Clark’s expedition, Marie Curie who pioneered research in radioactivity, Susan B. Anthony who introduced women’s suffrage in the U.S., Rosa Parks who is regarded as the mother of the freedom movement, Amelia Earhart who was the first woman to fly solo, and political activist Helen Keller, to name a few.
And now, women are excelling in another male-dominated industry: the technology sector. There are now women playing huge roles in premier tech companies including Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, and Oracle CFO and co-president Safra Catz. Sadly these are rare instances in which women play a leading role within the tech space. In a recent Census report, it was determined that female computer workers are on a 20+ year decline, with only 22 percent of software developers being women. It’s not because women are not interested in technology, but it’s just a bit harder for women to survive in the tech world.
Learning from women in tech
Here at SiliconANGLE, we have honored the women who have been exerting tremendous efforts in the tech industry to make it more female-friendly and to battle gender biases, and learned a great deal from their experiences. This year Hooked Media CEO Prita Uppal, who gave us her 4 Tips to Survive in the Land of Brogrammers, and Anita Sarkeesian gave us her “Tropes vs. Women in Video Games” series, which critically examines common literary tropes used in video games that are less than flattering to women.
In our CEO Series Special Edition: Powerful Women in Tech and our Mentor moments : Inspiring women in tech, we featured the likes of Skava founder and CTO Sudha Varadarajan, Enloop CEO Cynthia McCahon, FirstRain President and CEO Penny Herscher, Springpad CEO Jacqueline Hampton and many other inspiring women. They all imparted how they are revolutionizing the tech industry.
But you don’t have to be a woman on top of the corporate ladder to be able to inspire other women (or even men). Take, for example, Rain Ashford, who puts her own quirky and fashionable twist on the Quantified Self revolution, which aims to inspire women to be more interested in the tech world.
Because many women are just downright awesome, theCUBE has compiled a playlist featuring many of today’s powerful women in tech. The collection features interesting women from different tech companies that have been guests on SiliconANGLE’s premier broadcast program, each discussing how their companies are bringing forward innovative solutions to the cloud, mobile services, storage, social networking and customer relations, to name a few.
The playlist features interviews with Anjul Bhambhri, Vice President for Big Data and Streams at IBM; analyst Elizabeth Hedstrom Henlin, Arista Networks President and CEO Jayshree Ullal, ARM Director of Server Systems and Ecosystems Lakshmi Mandyam, Insiemi Networks Senior Vice President Soni Jiandani, and many other women from various sectors of the tech industry.
