Gamers Fighting DDOS Attacks

Yesterday, a new DDOS troll moved onto the gaming scene by lighting up a Twitter account (@DerpTrolling) and began to wash away Internet gaming services. The anti-fireworks and criminal behavior culminated in the harassment of a Twitch streamer named PhantomL0rd who had his address posted onto the Internet to the tune of pizza deliveries and even a raid by the police off a fake tip.

During New Years Eve the DDOS troll hit Guild Wars 2 (knocking the login servers offline for a while [reddit]) much to the ire of players who found themselves unable to complete monthly projects. Then the trolls moved onto DDOSing the login servers for Minecraft, delivering equally frustrating results.

The trolls cause an interesting reaction for the Twitch streamers that they harass who suddenly receive a huge number of new viewers to watch what DerpTrolling will do next. Adding fuel to the fire.

Threats and reactions from Twitch streamers

DerpTrolling backs up threats with the potential of using DDOS against games or Twitch streamers—having previously proven that they’re able to commit to it. As part of their New Years Eve Day harassment, Derp has tweeted at numerous different streamers including Twitch streamer Xaryulol and demanded that he remove his subscription setting on his channel.

Eventually Xaryulol gave in and removed the subscriptions-only setting and DerpTrolling pulled the tweet from their timeline.

After Xaryulol capitulated to the demands, the DDOS troll moved onto KACEYTRON’s Twitch channel with a tweet deriding her about wearing lipstick on camera. Hordes of fans following DerpTrolling flooded from the Twitter and into her chat spamming “LIPSTICK.”

The results of attempting to troll Kaceytron didn’t trigger much reaction except for the “LIPSTICK” spamming from visitors from Twitter.

DDOS trolls using social media and mayhem fans to drive attention

So far, DerpTrolling has been following the LulzSec formula of using big threats and DDOS to grab attention–hitting the gaming community in particular. With reddit weighing in each time a gaming service becomes inoperable is only spreading their legend.

This story is spreading with a flame and furor via social media and reddit above and beyond what traditional media could have driven just on its own.
