Cisco moves content delivery platform to the cloud at CES 2014
A year after exiting the home networking market with the sale of Linksys to Belkin, Cisco is as determined as ever to gain a foothold in the living room, but this time around the networking giant is focusing exclusively on service providers. Yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company unveiled a cloud-powered version of its Videoscape media delivery platform that enhances support for open source technology and platform-independent content.
Videoscape Cloud Software, as the new offering is known, can be deployed as a service or implemented on-premise. The platform is simpler to provision and provides support for OpenStack, which is being increasingly adopted by service providers seeking to replicate the scale-out architectures pioneered by the likes of Google and Facebook.
“Videoscape leads the industry as a platform for delivering exciting video services and experiences. With these new Videoscape cloud capabilities, our customers have two additional ways to deploy Videoscape, meaning they can get new services to market faster than ever before,” said Joe Cozzolino the senior vice president and general manager of Cisco’s Service Provider Video Infrastructure business.
Besides being more elastic than the previous version, Videoscape Cloud can be also customized with Cisco’s Cloud Fusion architecture, which enables customers to mix and match technologies according to their use cases. That includes infrastructure as well as software and services.
Finally, the offering comes with Open UX Foundation software that, according to Cisco, provides improved performance for set-top boxes and other connected devices running HTML5 applications. The cross-platform language is instrumental to the company’s plans for what it calls the Internet of Everything.
“Our unique Cisco Fusion strategy allows customers to mix-and-match deployment options to best grow revenue and reduce their overall costs to roll out video services, including exciting second screen, 4K video and IoE based Connected Life services.” Cozzolino stated.
