Spotify slashes 50% off its premium service for students

spotify-logo-primary-vertical-light-background-rgbCloud music streaming service Spotify is making itself more affordable for students by offering its premium service at 50 percent off.

This offering allows students to enjoy the same perks premium subscribers enjoy for only $4.99. A premium subscription provides access to more than 20 million songs without ad interruption, and the service can be accessed on multiple different devices such as desktops, mobiles, tablets, and even through a home entertainment system.

A premium subscription also allows users to download their favorite songs or playlist, so they can listen to them offline and not eat up their data allowance. Also, Spotify says that its songs audio is of a better quality when you have a premium subscription.

Spotify has partnered with SheerID to help the service authenticate whether a person is indeed a student, and is eligible for the discount.

The discount is effective immediately, so if you want non-stop music at an affordable monthly fee, check out Spotify’s student offering here.

Earlier this month, Spotify acquired The Echo Nest,  one of the industry’s top music intelligence platforms, in a deal valued at $100 million, in which 90 percent of that is Spotify equity. The deal will allow Spotify to leverage The Echo Nest’s in-depth musical understanding and tools for curation to drive music discovery, as the company continues to take on competitors such as Pandora.

Back in February, the service correctly predicted Grammy winners for Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with the use of its streaming data. Spotify continues to improve its service as it prepares to launch in more markets to make cloud music streaming available to more consumers.
