iControl has partnered with Netgear to launch a 7-inch Android tablet, dubbed the STS7000, dedicated to home automation.  The tablet allows users to disarm their security system, turn lights on or off, lock doors, and even view family photos using a single device that fits in the palm of their hand.

The dirty little secret of wearable tech revealed

Wearable technology is supposed to be the ‘next big thing,’ but did you know that most owners of wearable gadgets stop using them within six months after purchase?  That’s the dirty little secret that could ultimately plague the wearable tech industry, but  ConnectedDevice CEO Henri-Nicholas Olivier believes his team has cracked the code to getting consumers to keep wearing their high-tech gadgets – the Cogito smartwatch.

Unlike most smartwatches that bombard the wearer with redundant features already available on smartphones, the Cogito smartwatch only delivers important notifications to the wearer and minimizes the time a user needs to look at a second screen.

Fighting crime just got smarter (aka geekier)

Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne aren’t the only ones using technology to fight crime, as the Tazewell, VA County Sheriff’s office recently launched an app for Android and iOS to facilitate better communication between citizens and law enforcement. The app provides information about local news, missing persons, those wanted by the authorities, weather reports, road blocks, traffic reports, accidents, and even the ability to send anonymous tips.

Self-healing servers a trending goal for Modern IT

A report released by Emerson Network Power stated that there will be a major shift in mid-sized data center management in the coming years.  Survey respondents believe data centers will shrink, and will one day be powered by renewable energy. Respondents also believe the majority of data computing will happen in the cloud, and that data centers will be equipped with self-healing and predictive maintenance capabilities.

The projections seem to be on the mark, as scientists at Battelle unveiled a self-healing smart bead that is able to detect corrosion even before it is visible to the naked eye.
