Intel acquires identity management service PasswordBox

passwordboxIntel Corp. has announced that it has acquired Montreal based identity management service PasswordBox Inc.

The company, founded by Daniel Robichaud, had previously raised $8.2 million over two rounds, from investors including OMERS Ventures and Real Ventures.

PasswordBox offers “an innovative free identity manager that removes the hassle of logging into all your browsers, apps, and devices, with its patent-pending 1-Tap and 1-Click login.”

Without the spin, a mobile focused identity management service that allows logins into websites and apps without needing to remember a password.

Intel said in a statement that PasswordBox will become a part of the Safe Identity organization within Intel Security Group, a division of the company that is “committed to delivering solutions that reduce the pain of passwords, simplify and strengthen security and providing consumers with easy access to their digital lives.”

Chris Young, Senior VP and GM of the Intel Security group said that “Everyone can relate to password fatigue. The PasswordBox service has already brought relief to millions of consumers who now enjoy simple, instant login…Intel Security and PasswordBox share the same goal of improving digital identity protection across all devices and platforms.”

PasswordBox claims have had its app download 14 million times, and it popularity was reflected when in won best mobile app at CES 2014.

Details of the acquisition price were not disclosed.
