Esports manager threatens to evict player’s mother if he quits
As if the recurring accusations of cheating and match fixing were not enough, the esports world has been hit by yet another scandal after one team manager threatened to have a player’s mother lose her house.
Marcin “Kori” Wolski, an 18-year-old professional League of Legends player for MeetYourMakers (MYM), was fed up with esports organizers who had failed to pay him for several months worth of matches.
Unsure whether he would be paid for an upcoming match and finding that he no longer enjoyed playing with the team, Wolski decided to bow out, but he rejoined the team shortly after, issuing an apology and agreeing to pay a fine for leaving.
The esports community was confused by Wolski’s back and forth behavior–until now.
Wolski uploaded a recording of a conversation he had with MYM manager Sebastian “Falli” Rotterdam, in which Rotterdam first tries to guilt Wolski into staying with the team, and then resorts to direct threats.
“We were talking with sponsors right now for the team, and if we don’t play the first two matches, we lose the sponsors and we lose our jobs,” Rotterdam said in the recording.
When Wolski did not appear to be on board, Rotterdam attempted to make him feel guilty for what would happen to the other players. “He came over from Bosnia to here,” Rotterdam said of another player. “To work here, and he’s losing his job.”
“I will make sure you will lose the house”
Finally, Rotterdam realized that guilt would not be enough to sway Wolski, so he threatened the player’s mother.
“You know your mom signed the contract?” Rotterdam asked. “I will make sure you will lose the house. That’s a promise.”
After the recording became public, MYM CEO Khalid Naim told the Daily Dot, “Concerning this recording I will react and take the necessary steps to avoid this, since something like that is not allowed and we don’t tolerate this here.”
Rotterdam issue an apology soon after, saying he “made a big mistake” and offered to step down from managing MYM.
Wolski sent an email to Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends, outlining his issues with MYM. “I felt so scared under MYM management,” Wolski wrote.
Riot is currently investigating the matter but has not yet made any official statements.
