Microsoft gives more away about Windows 10 and says the new OS is going global in 111 languages this summer
Microsoft’s new, and perhaps last, operating system, Windows 10, will launch this summer in 190 countries across the world in 111 languages, Terry Myerson, executive vice president of Windows, announced. The statement came during a speech as Microsoft were showing off Windows 10 at the Windows Hardware Engineering Community (WinHEC) conference in Shenzhen, China.
Windows 10 will see certain customizations dedicated to the Chinese market, including a Mandarin language Cortana personal assistant. In a blog post Myerson wrote, “Windows has always been global with more than 1.5 billion users around the world and here in China hundreds of millions of PCs operate Windows today.”
Myerson also revealed Windows Hello, one of the new features coming to Windows 10. The feature is a biometric authentication sign-in process that will unlock a device using an iris, fingerprint, or face scan. In an epoch were security has never been more important to consumers Microsoft believes that Windows Hello will help create a deep sense of trust. Myerson went on to say that all OEM systems incorporating the Intel RealSense F200 sensor, infrared technology to identify your face or iris, will fully support Windows Hello, including automatic sign-in to Windows.
Having already announced free upgrades to Windows 10 for people using Windows 7 or Windows 8.1., across all devices, Myerson revealed at the conference that the company is also working with China’s largest software companies, Lenovo, Tencent and Qihoo 360, in a move to give free upgrades to their large network of customers.
The Redmond company also said that it is working with the world’s third largest smartphone distributor, Xiaomi, to test Windows 10. It’s reported that Xiaomi, whose phones are powered by Android, will enter into a program with Microsoft to test the new OS on select smartphones. Myerson was vague about the deal, but did say, “A select group of Xiaomi Mi 4 power users will be invited to help test Windows 10 and contribute to its future release later this year. These power users will have the opportunity to download the Windows 10 Technical Preview – installing it and providing their feedback to Microsoft.”
