Nomad’s Pod promises four full ‘on-the-go’ charges for Apple Watch

Inside podAccessory maker Nomad Goods, Inc. is out with two new accessories for Apple Inc.’s upcoming Apple Watch. The first, the Stand, is, as the name suggests, a charging stand for Apple Watch, and the second, the Pod, is a portable power dock and cable manager for the Apple Watch.

Made from military-grade extruded aluminum, the Stand is meant for use on a desk or bedside table, and Nomad says it has already started production and only needs to finalize the charging interface once Apple releases final charger specs for its smartwatch.

The Pod, on the other hand, is a far more interesting gizmo. Combining a portable power dock and a cable manager, the Pod sports a high-density, 1800mAh lithium polymer rechargeable battery that, according to Nomad, has enough oomph to recharge the Apple Watch four times from completely flat.

The Pod has a Type A USB port to connect the standard Apple Watch charging cable, which is neatly stored away with the induction charging puck slotted into place on top of the Pod’s concentric charging nest.

Nomad claims the Pod is the first Apple Watch accessory that can be charged with the new Type C USB cable, and the gizmo also has Micro USB connectivity for backup.

The entire Pod is housed in and protected by a slick-looking military grade aluminum lid.

The Pod weighs just 80 grams, and Nomad says it’s smaller than a hockey puck, making it easy to carry with.

Nomad first entered the iPhone accessory market in 2012 with the ChargeCard, a portable USB cable the size and shape of a credit card.

Now the company says it’s evolving into a smartwatch-first accessories company, stating, “We [Nomad] believe the smartwatch will soon eclipse the smartphone as the number one mobile device, including telephone and camera.”

The Pod is slated to start shipping June 1 and costs $59. With the initial production run limited to 5,000 units, the Pod is available in three finishes: Space Grey, Silver or Matte Black Plastic, and can be pre-ordered on Nomad’s website.

The Stand is slated to ship May 1 and will also sell for $59.
