Insulin Angel

Diabetes, asthma, fatal allergies – these are just some health conditions that require people to have their medication with them at all times. Just as important is keeping those meds at the right temperature. A new device called Insulin Angel launched on Indiegogo which aims to help patients, their families and caregivers better manage their conditions.

Insulin Angel is a system comprised of a medication carrier, a proximity sensor and a mobile app. The carrying case has temperature sensors to determine whether the medication is kept at the right temperature, warning of variant temperatures. It also has a proximity sensor that alerts the person if he or she is about to leave behind the medication case. As for the smartphone app, users can view real-time information about the medication, such as its current temperature.

Insulin Angel uses the relayr WunderBar, Open Source Cloud and SDKs to provide users with real-time information about the whereabouts of their medication, temperature, as well as alerting them when it’s time to take their medication. Though the name implies it is directed at people with diabetes, Insulin Angel will also work with medications for asthma as well as epi-pens.

Biogen teams up with Patients Like Me for MS research

Cambridge-based biotechnology company Biogen has teamed up with Patients Like Me, a patient powered research network to better understand how fitness trackers of today can help patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease that affects the flow of information in the brain as well as between the brain and the body which results in disruption of motor skill, among others.

The partnership kicked off a new study that signed up 250 MS patients with 203 of them willing to share their fitness tracking results with researchers for three weeks. The patients were given Fitbit trackers to use and though half of the group has never used any fitness tracker, 55 percent of the patients stated that the fitness tracker helped them change their health routine while 68 percent believed that the tracker could help them manage their condition.
