Microsoft launches 1TB Xbox One and gives 500GB console a permanent price drop

Microsoft has unveiled a new Xbox One with 1TB of storage. The new console, which will come with a wireless controller and a 3.5mm headset jack, will go for $399 and start shipping on June 16 in the United States. The new version, for a limited time and only in select regions, will be bundled with Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Although Microsoft only just made this official, a leak appeared on Amazon for a short time last week.

Besides the extra storage, there have been some other improvements and aesthetic changes (now matte black instead of the glossy finish). The new stereo jack means that headsets can be plugged into the wireless controller, while volume settings, voice and game audio balance, and mic monitoring can be changed on the console while you play. The controller can also be bought separate to the console at $59.99, or $64.99 for the Xbox One Special Edition Covert Forces Wireless Controller.

Xbox wireless adapter for Windows planned

Another major feature of the new Xbox is the planned release of the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, making it possible to stream games through the console to PCs, laptops and tablets. The $24.99 adapter can be bought as a standalone or come bundled with the wireless controller for $79.95 U.S. No exact date has been given for the release, although Microsoft said it will be sometime in the fall.

At the same time, Microsoft also revealed that the standard 500BG version will be sold at $349, and while the console has seen price drops like this before, Redmond said that this time the reduction is permanent. Last year Microsoft managed to sneak ahead of Sony PlayStation 4 in the console wars, which was something of a novelty. The lowered cost may have been the main reason for this, but the extra storage may also prove to be a main factor in the next heat of the console wars. That’s why Sony is reportedly planning on releasing its own 1TB version of the PlayStation soon, according to various gaming media.
