The Steam Monster Summer Sale kicks of with deals on GTA 5, Elite: Dangerous, and more

Update: It appears Rockstar Games has engaged in some shady business to avoid the sale. The studio bundled Grand Theft Auto V  with a Shark Cash Card, making the discounted price still $59.99. GTA V itself is not actually on sale.

Prepare your wallets, the Steam Summer sale has finally arrived, and the first day kicks of with deals on dozens of top PC games including Grand Theft Auto VCities: SkylinesElite: Dangerous, and more. If this is your first Steam sale or you just want to know how to stretch your dollar as far as possible, read our guide on how to get the most out of a Steam sale.

The sale will run from June 11-June 20, and it will most likely end at 9AM PDT on the final day (as usual). Do not make the mistake of thinking the sale runs until the end of the day on the 20th.

This year’s Summer Sale comes with a new “Monster Summer Game,” a click and upgrade minigame game that is a bit like a multiplayer version of Cookie Clicker (apologies for the hours of productivity I just wasted by linking that).

The Monster Summer Game lets players team up against monsters and earn reward like Steam trading cards and exclusive game discounts. The game has already hit over 500,000 participants less than an hour after the sale went live, so you might have to wait a bit before playing.

Right now, nearly every attempt to access the game is met with a message saying the connection failed, and for those who do manage to make it through to the game, it seems to be a little buggy at the moment. Many of the upgrade purchases are not working correctly, and some of the monsters also sometimes fail to load.

The game will likely work a little better once the peak traffic for the sale dies down—at least until it picks back up again tomorrow.

Once you do manage to start a game, you will continue to damage monsters and earn in-game gold even when you are not playing, so be sure to check back every now and then to buy new upgrades to help yourself and your team. While it is possible to die in the game, even while you are away, you will respawn automatically and continue gaining experience and gold.

Crafting Summer Sale badges will also unlock new upgrades, so you can either start collecting trading cards or take the opportunity to sell them to other users through the Steam Marketplace.
