Data ninjas study data and build solutions | #BigDataNYC
IBM’s new Cloud Data Services is helping developers learn how to navigate the world of Big Data on IBM’s Cloud. Larry Weber, program director of Cloud Data Services at IBM, sat down at BigDataNYC 2015 with George Gilbert and Dave Vellante, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, to talk about the services IBM is providing.
IBM’s Cloud Data Services
Cloud Data Services was formed at the beginning of this year — but according to Weber, it really started in 2014 when IBM bought a company called CloudIT and Bluemix to implement Cloud services. Since then, Bluemix has exploded with different services and providers.
From a data perspective, IBM decided that it was going to have its own division wrapped around Cloud data services for developers. “It’s almost like the Wild West, right?” said Weber. “We’re doing it around developers and people who are leveraging this.”
Developer advocates
IBM’s Cloud Data Services’ goal is to give developers and builders the tools to create the next company, applications, etc. IBM’s Cloud Data Services uses what it calls developer advocates (dev advocates) who are “kind of like data ninjas,” said Weber. “Their job is to study the data and build solutions.” The advocates will build and create the structure to build out new applications.
“The best way to think of it is like Legos,” said Weber. It’s creating blueprints to help people get started on how to build their own ideas, too. Some of the blueprints include partnerships with Apple and Twitter, the Internet of Things, and other language and development starter kits. “We’re telling people, ‘Let’s show you how to do this,’” said Weber. “A lot of it is training. I have to make darn sure that I have the right supply of content.”
