Motorola Switcharoo: Taking Apple to Court for Patent Infringement
Motorola is yet again in the news. The company has sued Apple for patent law infringements. Kirk Dailey, corporate vice president of intellectual property at Motorola Mobility, expressed the company’s dismay over failed negotiations for licensing with Apple in the official statement. Motorola has filed complaints in district courts of Illinois and Florida and also with the U.S. International Trade Commission. This seems like one lengthy legal battle, as it takes into account 18 unique patents by Motorola and key products by Apple (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and certain Mac computers). PC Mag reports,
The Motorola patents include wireless communication technologies, such as WCDMA (3G), GPRS, 802.11 and antenna design, and key smartphone technologies including wireless e-mail, proximity sensing, software application management, location-based services and multi-device synchronization, Motorola said. The ITC complaint asks the court to block the import of Apple’s allegedly infringing products.
Motorola have been in a flurry of lawsuits either filing one or facing another. In the recent past, they have sued HTC and have been sued by Microsoft. Just yesterday Motorola reached an agreement for the suit Apple brought against them. Is this a knee-jerk reaction or just more business as usual? Whatever the case, the mobile technology industry is getting quite a share of lawsuits and patent litigation. Other than seeking court interventions, Motorola are really focusing on their hand-set manufacturing capability. they have announced a spin-off of the said unit by early next month.
