Pocket adds public feed to let others follow what you are reading

We do not always have the time to read an interesting article or watch a funny video when we come across it on the web. Pocket simplifies the process for you by allowing you to save items for your later viewing pleasure. Even when you are offline, you can access your saved items at any stage.

Pocket is now looking to further expand its offering, which would allow you to share your favorite articles, videos and anything else you come across on the web, to a public profile. If people are interested in the stuff you are sharing, they can follow you to see what you are viewing in a feed of their recommended items.

When sharing a link to one of your favorite articles, you can include big pieces of the article to show your followers what aspects you really enjoyed.

This beta version of Pocket will allow you to follow your Facebook and Twitter friends who are also saving to Pocket. Alternatively, you can also visit anyone’s Pocket profile and be able to view the items that he or she has decided to share publicly.

Any items that you save to Pocket will remain private by default. Only the items that you specifically choose to share publicly will be visible to everyone else.

Started in 2007, the company’s founder and CEO, Nate Weiner launched Pocket as a Firefox extension. Pocket’s user base has since reached 17 million, with these users collectively saving over 2 billion items.

In July, Pocket launched “Recommendations”. This new feature looks at the best content currently being saved across the app and chooses content uniquely for you based on what you are currently saving and reading.

Weiner told The Verge that people will eventually stop using Twitter-like feeds when they are on the lookout for interesting articles to read. Rather, “there’s a robot who knows exactly what you want, and here’s your stuff. How do we move to that as fast as possible?”

If you are interested in testing the latest version of Pocket, they are rolling out the public beta today on both Android and iOS.
