The Pepsi phone is now on sale in China for those who don’t like Coca-Cola
Soft drink maker PepsiCo has officially entered the mobile phone marketplace with its first phone going on sale in China.
The Pepsi P1s is manufactured by Shenzhen Scooby Communication Equipment Co. and is aiming squarely at the middle of the market with a phone that sports some decent specs even if it’s not going to break any records.
Available in Blue, Gold, and Silver, the P1s ships with a 5.5-inch (1080 x 1920 pixels) Full HD 2.5D Curved Screen display powered by a 1.7 GHz Octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor with Mali 450-MP4 GPU.
Along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory, the phone comes with a hybrid dual SIM with the second slot also being able to take a microSD card as well.
The phone runs dido OS 6.1, an operating system based on Android 5.1 Lollipop, and offers a 13MP rear camera with LED flash and 5MP front-facing camera for the obligatory selfie shots.
Interestingly given it’s not a top of the range phone, the P1s comes with a rear fingerprint scanner meaning that means it may eventually support Google Pay along with presumably security scanning for the phone itself.
A 3000mAh battery powered the phone which ships with 4G LTE / 3G, WiFi 802.1 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS.
Size wise the phone comes in at 152.2 ×76.2×7.7 mm with a weight: 158 grams (5.57 ounces).
According to Fonearena, an initial early bird offer of 499 yuan ($78) has sold out but those keen on sticking it to the folks at Coca-Cola are currently able to order one for 699 yuan ($ 110), although you’d have to be quick at that’s limited to the first 1,000 orders.
After the initial early bird offering the P1s will be available to buy for 1299 yuan ($202) with the company throwing in a protective cover, USB cable and a charger for good measure.
Branding
As we noted when reports of the phone first emerged back in October, product branding of this sort may well become more and more common as the literal thousands of Android mobile phones makers, particularly in China, try to find ways to make their handsets stand out from the crowd; as of August there are said to some 1,294 different Android makers so although it may seem somewhat odd that the Pepsi phone even exists, it certainly gets people talking.
The Pepsi phone itself isn’t anything remarkable although at the price it does appear to offer good value for money.
There’s no word as to whether the phone may go on sale outside of China at any time in the near future.
