Google announces mobile app support for Android Pay in U.S., Australian launch in 2016
Following its U.S. launch in September, Google’s mobile payments service, Android Pay can now be used to make payments inside mobile apps. The initial list of mobile apps to support Android Pay in the U.S. includes shopping apps like Jet, Spring, and Wish, on-demand services like Lyft, Instacart, and Doordash, as well as others like Hotel Tonight, OpenTable, and more.
According to Google, a slew of apps will add support for Android Pay over the next few months and, for a limited time, the company is encouraging consumers to use Android Pay in mobile apps by offering discounts in select apps, including $20 off on OpenTable dining, $10 off your first Lyft ride, $10 off DoorDash, or 30 percent off Vinted.
The list of apps that now support Android Pay in the U.S. includes Fancy, JackThreads, Houzz, Printicular, Vinted, ParkWhiz, Handy, and SpotHero.
Apps that are set to roll out Android Pay support in the coming months include Uber, Priceline, Seamless, GrubHub, Eventbrite, Groupon, and NewEgg.
Android Pay to launch in Australia in first half of 2016
In addition to mobile app support for Android Pay, Google also announced its plans to roll out Android Pay outside the U.S. next year, starting with Australia in the first half of 2016.
According to Google, it already has agreements in place with a number of Australian banks, including ANZ, Westpac, Bank of Melbourne, Bank of South Australia, Bendigo Bank, Cuscal, ING DIRECT, Macquarie Bank, and St. George, with more to come.
Once Android Pay goes live in Australia, users will be able to make tap-and-pay payments for in-store payments, load loyalty cards and make in-app purchases.
Android Pay in Australia will support credit and debit cards from MasterCard and Visa and Google is working with Eftpos to add support for its cards to the service. While Android Pay will work wherever contactless payments are already accepted, Google is working with a number of retailers to add support ahead of the launch, including 7-Eleven, Brumby’s Bakery, Coles Express, Coles Supermarkets, Crust Gourmet Pizza, Domino’s Pizza Enterprises Limited, Donut King, Gloria Jean’s Coffees, McDonald’s, Michel’s Patisserie, Pizza Capers, and Telstra.
A number of Aussie apps are working on adding support for Android Pay at launch, including Catch of the Day, EatNow, GoCatch, Kogan.com, Menulog, OzSale, Rewardle, and The Iconic.
While Google has not shared any hard numbers on Android Pay adoption, the announcement claims that “millions of people [have] set up Android Pay” and the “vast majority of them” are using the mobile payments service with more than one million locations across the U.S. accepting tap and pay transactions.
