Facebook (slowly) rolls out support for Apple’s Live Photos on iOS
A couple of weeks ago, Tumblr Inc. updated its iOS app to offer support for Apple’s Live Photos. Following in Tumblr’s footsteps, Facebook is said to be rolling out support for Live Photos taken with the iPhone 6s or 6s Plus (via TechCrunch).
Live Photo support is limited to iOS users, so if you are an Android, desktop or mobile web user you will not get to enjoy Apple’s new moving photos in your Facebook feed. To take a Live Photo, you will need either an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus; however, if you do not have the latest iPhone you will still be able to see Live Photos on Facebook if you have iOS 9 loaded on your iPhone or iPad. Users on other devices will just see the static version if you come across a Live Photo on Facebook.
Facebook is going for a slow rollout of support for Live Photos. While some iOS users will be able to enjoy the feature in Facebook straight away, many will not see Live Photos until early next year.
If you are on the list to receive support for Live Photos now, then uploading one to Facebook is as simple as loading a static photo. The only difference is that in your camera roll, you will see a “LIVE” box in the bottom right-hand corner for any Live Photo. If you tap the “LIVE” box it will upload as a Live Photo, if you do not tap it then it loads as a static photo.
Once your Live Photo is added to Facebook, your friends who are running iOS 9 or higher will be able to view your Live Photo. When they tap the concentric circular icon in the corner of the photo, which indicates that it is a Live Photo, your friends will be able to see and hear what you have been doing and get involved in your special moment.
If you are not one of the lucky iOS users to start enjoying Live Photos on Facebook now, you will have to be patient until early next year when the company will roll it out globally.
Now that both Tumblr and Facebook are offering support for Live Photos, we will have to see whether other social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook-owned Instagram will follow suit.
