Sleeping Dogs spin-off Triad Wars has been cancelled while still in beta

Fans of Hong Kong crime game Sleeping Dogs were skeptical when the studio announced an online-only multiplayer spin-off called Triad Wars, and now it looks like that skepticism may have been warranted, as developer United Front Games has announced the cancellation of the project before it has even completed beta testing.

In a post on the official game forums, one of the developers wrote:

Since the start of the Triad Wars Closed Beta this year, diligent Enforcers have run rampant through the streets of Hong Kong, killing rivals and building Empires. During this time we have gathered immense amounts of feedback, information, and data on the game. We’ve loved seeing how you’ve played Triad Wars but we know it wasn’t right for many of you so we’re letting you know today that we are going to close the beta and service on January 20th 2016 at 12 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. That’s 4 weeks from today and over this time we’re going to leave the game up and running for you to continue to enjoy but we will not be accepting any more purchases. To help you enjoy these final 4 weeks we’re going to make Gold available free of charge and we’ll shortly be posting news on the forums about how to deal with refunds of unused Gold. Thank you very much for all the testing, feedback and support!

The game had been heavily criticized since it was first announced. Sleeping Dogs, the game on which Triad Wars was based, was an open-world crime thriller set in Hong Kong. While the game has sometimes been lumped into the “GTA clone” genre due to its similarities to the Grand Theft Auto games, Sleeping Dogs was also praised for its colorful setting, engaging story, and excellent voice acting.

Meanwhile, Triad Wars was never intended to be story-based at all and instead focused on repetitive beat-em-up mechanics and MMO-like progression. Also, while Triad Wars was billed as a multiplayer game, there was actually little to no interaction between players, as the gameplay involved fighting hordes of nameless NPCs rather than other players.

So far there has been no word from publisher Square Enix Holdings Co Ltd on either the cancellation of Triad Wars or the future of Sleeping Dogs.
