Amazon had a jolly Christmas with 3M new Prime users, Prime Video surge, double own device sales

Amazon.com, Inc. has seen a record-breaking holiday season with three million customers signing up for Amazon Prime, increased Prime Video usage, a shift towards mobile shopping and top selling technology including smart TV’s and Amazon Fire tablets.

Three million consumers sign up for Amazon Prime

According to Amazon, three million customers signed up for its $99-per-year Prime subscription service in the week before Christmas. Amazon does not actually say how many Prime members they have globally, only stating that there are “tens of millions of members worldwide.”

Prime subscribers receive free shipping and during this holiday season, which Amazon defines as November 1 to December 19, more than 200 million items benefited from free shipping.

Amazon Prime members also took advantage of super fast two-hour delivery via Prime Now, with Christmas Eve accounting for the busiest day ever for Prime Now.

More people watching Prime Video

This holiday season, Prime Video doubled the total amount of viewing hours compared to last year, with Amazon’s original series The Man in the High Castle becoming the most watched TV season ever on Prime Video by 4.5x.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 proved to be the most popular movie during the holiday season on Prime Video while Interstellar was the most popular movie on Christmas Day.

Mobile shopping increases to 70 percent

Amazon’s data has shown that nearly 70 percent of customers used their mobile devices to shop on Amazon.com during the holiday season while the number of U.S.-based Prime members shopping on mobile more than doubled compared to 2014.

During Cyber Monday, the company processed more than 33 electronics purchases per second from mobile devices worldwide.

Amazon devices do well over holiday season

Amazon’s own devices performed well over the holiday season and sold two times the amount compared to last year. Amazon.com’s best-selling product was its own Fire tablet while its Fire TV Stick took third spot.

Amazon devices also proved popular on Christmas Eve with the Fire tablet, Amazon Echo and Fire TV Stick claiming three of the top five items ordered and delivered the day before Christmas.

Amazon.com customers purchased enough 50-inch TVs to span the average width of the Grand Canyon while customers purchased a watch on Amazon.com every three seconds this holiday season.
