Yahoo embraces DevOps mobile analytics with update to Mobile Developer Suite
Personalized web portal giant Yahoo! Inc. announced an update to its mobile DevOps library, the Yahoo Mobile Developer Suite, at its San Francisco Mobile Developer Conference. The developer suite includes an all new Flurry, a data analysis platform, tvOS analytics support and a dashboard for direct ad control.
Data analysis from apps running in the field is core to the work that DevOps team do, by capturing and discovering patterns in app usage and code behavior. Yahoo’s Flurry suite is a full app performance tracking library with its own dashboard and data visualization system. The system is also easy to use and requires no code or queries, just the creation of reports using the back-end.
The Flurry dashboard app is available for iOS and Android and provides a variety of reporting capabilities including app selection, grouping, events, funnels, cohort and segment analysis (such as usage, retention, etc.) as well as tracking interests and demographics.

Flurry utilizes a lightweight SDK for attaching to apps for Objective-C, Swift and Android.
“Using Flurry Analytics, we have been able to greatly improve our apps and in-app purchase rates. We now know what users want in the app and can provide that with confidence,” said Patrick M. Byrne, Chairman & CEO Overstock.com. (See this Overstock.com case study from Yahoo for more examples of use.)

This update also adds analytics for Apple Inc.’s tvOS apps, a slimmed down version of iOS used for entertainment and TV apps. Now developers using Yahoo’s suite can gather data from usage of apps on tvOS in order to monetize and examine user behavior.
Finally, Yahoo has added enhanced advertisement service data analysis to Flurry, which will let developers delve even further into how their apps are marketed and generate ad revenue. According to Yahoo, its native ad business has gone from zero to a one trillion ad-request run rate, which give Yahoo a great deal of data to sift through to understand which ads run best on what platforms.
The DevOps ANGLE: Yahoo in the mobile DevOps ecosystem
Flurry Analytics now supports over 250,000 developers, reaching more than 800,000 apps across more than 2 billion devices with 10 billion sessions every day. Last year, the company reports, mobile app usage rose by 58 percent and that knowledge paves the way for understanding how to better assist developers when it comes to mobile app delivery.
In the world of mobile DevOps understanding how applications function in the wild and how users interact with the app and servers at home drives the next iteration of software.
“Everything we do at Yahoo is grounded on data and analytics,” said Simon Khalaf SVP of Publisher Products. “Today, we’re excited to share our proprietary insights and research. State-of-the-industry reports for mobile and native advertising, and updates to the Yahoo Mobile Developer Suite to empower developers to grow their apps and businesses.”
Yahoo developers will have immediate access to these new tools through the Yahoo! Developer Network portal.
