A teacher from Maumelle, Arkansas, has disclosed how he lost his job after his Dropbox account was hacked and a video of him having sex with another guy was posted to a school website.

Twenty-nine year-old Brian Cody Bray disclosed to the Washington Blade that the first he knew of the hacking was when a co-worker rang him to tell him the video had been posted on the faculty page of the school’s website.

“Pretty much immediately after that phone call, I went to the bathroom and threw up,” Bray said. “I was just in shock that oh my God, this is something that will impact my career, impact my life and what am I going to do?”

He was subsequently summoned to a meeting with the school principal and a representative of the school district, where despite explaining that someone had hacked into his email account and then gained access to his usernames and passwords for various accounts, was told that they had no alternative but to terminate him.

Bray said that initially he thought that the decision was reasonable enough given he had lost any kind of authority with his students, but now thinks that the school officials have been unfair since they refused to provide him severance pay, and worse still suggested to the school community that the leaked video was Bray’s fault.

Hate crime?

According to Bray, at the same time as the video appeared on the school website, someone going by the name of “Jonathan” started sending text messages to a student of Bray informing him that his teacher was a “Fag” and that such a video has been posted online, and the name of a folder in his Dropbox account was changed by the hacker from “Private” to “FagTeachBray.”

Bray said school officials had told him they reported the incident to the local Police Department and the County’s Sheriff’s Office, and that the FBI was also investigating the case, but later learned that no official report had been filed by the school.

Although Bray himself has now filed a complaint, he isn’t confident that anyone will actually investigate what happened to him and take the matter seriously.

Arkansas doesn’t have a state hate crimes law, however, hacking is considered a felony offense.

Bray said he remains unemployed as he continues to deal with what has happened, particularly the loss of his career.
