Mobile Browers Outpacing Desktops: Study
Surprisingly, the tremendous growth of global mobile content has outpaced the growth of desktop web just within a small period of two years. As reported by dotMobi in its third annual study on mobile web trends, the number of mobile friendly sites has exploded almost 2,000 percent in two years.
In year 2008, the number of mobile ready sites were only 1,50,000, which rose to 3.01 in 2010. Simply incredible! On the other hand, the desktop web has expanded its wings by comparatively lower rate of 1,333 percent.
“Many brands and businesses are seeing that mobile is a vital, unique channel and not just a smaller desktop Web. Big brands are now adopting mobile Web strategies, but we still have a long way to go, given the ubiquity of mobile phones compared to computers,” said Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi.
“A recent Morgan Stanley report noted that the ‘mobile internet is ramping faster than desktop internet did and will be bigger than most think’. Businesses of all sizes need to prepare for the change in how people will access content by embracing the mobile Web.”
Taking an example of top 1,000 Alexa sites, we found that over 40% of sites are mobile friendly and include some of the most popular sites such as Google, Yahoo and Facebook. This study clearly demonstrates the use of mobile web content as a part of mobile web strategy of major brands. Moreover, it ensures better mobile user experience and hence better sales and customer loyalty.
