Has Hadoop become a headless torso? | #BigDataSV
Spark has cut the head off Hadoop by taking away compute, and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), which provides developers and IT teams with cloud storage, and Microsoft Azure, a cloud computing platform, have cut the legs off as the public cloud steals storage. All that Hadoop has left is the torso of YARN, a project aimed at helping organizations realize a modern data architecture.
Rishi Yadav, president and CEO of InfoObjects, Inc., discussed the lessening relevance of Hadoop with theCUBE cohosts John Furrier (@furrier), cofounder and CEO of SiliconANGLE Media, and Peter Burris (@plburris) SiliconANGLE Media’s new chief research officer, at the Fairmont San Jose in San Jose, California, where theCUBE is celebrating #BigDataWeek and discussing Big Data news and events from the #StrataHadoop conference.
Big Data is now fast data
Yadav feels that the current industry focus on customer needs is underrated at Strate + Hadoop World, affecting the levels of engagement with the event. Big Data has become fast data, he said, and what was innovation just a few years ago is now standard.
Five years ago concerns that are relevant to enterprise, such as security and governance, were not important in Hadoop. But now they are front and center, and Hadoop itself is becoming less relevant.
It’s not about technology anymore, it’s about the use-case
InfoObjects customers are asking about integration, and instead of technology, the conversation has become use-case orientated: What does the customer need? Yadav sees this remaining a theme as Big Data moves forward.
Profitability remains a challenge for open source
Yadav and Burris discussed the continued market validity of MapR, Hadoop, Cloudera and Hortonworks. The challenge with going with too much open source is how you make money, said Yadev.
Asked about the future for InfoObjects, Yadav responded that streaming will remain the company’s theme for 2016. He said that InfoObjects’ commandments for 2016 were:
- A streaming-first approach
- A streaming-only approach
