Facebook Becomes a Potent Forecasting Platform for Elections

It seems that social network’s favorite child has gone through different heights as Facebook proves itself to be a good bellwether for elections.

Twenty four hours after the US midterm elections, Facebook has demonstrated a huge potential in being a great venue for election results prediction. Basing from partial tallies and outcome of the electoral process that transpired yesterday, almost 74% of house race’s winners and 81% of elected senators predicted their victories via the number of fans and likes in Facebook. Gubernatorial race’s numbers are not included here.

There is an election tracker created that ranked all candidates using their fan counts. Facebook has already boasted positive upshots early this morning. Although Facebook may not be a flawless avenue that can indicate the exact performance of each candidate in the elections, it has a huge potential and may increase its accuracy over time.

Another good thing that was observed was Facebook’s effort in strengthening awareness campaigns on candidates’ profiles and portfolios via posting of political conversation on each of their pages. Good or bad, these documented discussion with the politicians and political segments have raised awareness and aid some people in deciding who to vote. Also, it is very interesting how supporters now come out in public to show their endearment and confidence on their bets.

Whether or not Facebook is accurate in its predictions through various applications, it has played an important role in information dissemination, dialogue campaigns of the candidates and engaging the populace more into the current election updates.  Beyond Facebook, we saw a number of social media initiatives taking shape around the midterm elections, following on the progress of the Presidential elections two years ago.
