Topps 3D Live Baseball Card – Not Your Father’s Baseball Card
UPDATE: They do not have a Mac version ready yet! PC version only! Mac version is suppose to be out in April according to the information. For $2, I figured this had to be fun to really try. Before you head out and grab that $2 pack of baseball cards, you might want to read that information link.
Topps launches 3D Live baseball cards this morning. This has to be one of the most innovative uses of a webcam, computer, and baseball cards I have seen. For those of you that have never bought a pack of baseball cards in your life, now might be the time to grab a pack.
Beginning Monday, collectors who hold a special Topps 3D Live baseball card in front of a webcam will see a three-dimensional avatar of the player on the computer screen. Rotate the card, and the figure rotates in full perspective. It’s called “augmented reality,” a combination of a real image with a virtual one.
The video is nicely done and shows what the future could hold for many products that have appeared to be over the hill and beyond their time. I never thought you could make baseball cards an attractive product to the new technological generation, but Topps has done their homework. Now the real test will be if consumers respond to this new product that has taken the old and made it appear new with a splash of technology.
