Facebook Places on BlackBerry, Speeding Mobile Deals Dash

BlackBerry’s Facebook application has a new version to be introduced to users soon, and it now supports Facebook Places. Some of the features that come with the updated app include the ability to check in, add a place and tag friends as well as follow friends’ check-ins; GPS and BB Maps integration; enhanced search capabilities; an updated friends list and clearer UI elements.

A released statement from this morning alerts that “over the next 24 hours, users will receive notices to upgrade to Facebook for BlackBerry v1.9, and the new version is also available for download in BlackBerry App World.”

FB Places’ expansion is directed to the BlackBerry front, but it’s only the latest in Facebook’s mobile expansion.  As we mentioned, Facebook launched the pioneering Places and Deals in the U.S., as the new platform enables, along with an updated Facebook version for iPhone, shoppers to get deals in local shops and businesses, including American Eagle Outfitters, Gap and more.

Facebook Places and Deals did more than just presenting users and customers with tempting new deals, as it is also in the beginning stages of developing an entirely new mobile marketing mini-economy. It’s participating is helping to spur similar behavior from a variety of industrys, with start-ups such as DailyCandy – one of the biggest e-newsletter operators around – launchin its own ‘Deals channel’. This may be an indicator of Places and Deals’ huge potential, and not just in the U.S.
