Intel AppUp Developer Program Opens MeeGo Portal
What happens when you merge two already powerful mobile-based software development suites into one OS and SDK? You get MeeGo. Intel Moblin and Nokia Maemo announced their unification at Mobile World Congress in February 2009 and recently announced the 1.1 core OS and SDK release of MeeGo in late October. To celebrate this launch, Intel is adding all the components developers need to their AppUp portal as well as other storefronts.
“Intel AppUp Developer Program is committed to helping developers be successful on MeeGo, which was the result of merging the Moblin and Maemo platforms,” writes the Intel Newsroom today. “In preparation for the official launch of MeeGo-supported applications in 2011, Intel is inviting application developers to download the MeeGo 1.1 SDK and visit the AppUp developer site for MeeGo to get started.”
From the looks of it, MeeGo provides a powerful suite of tools not just for mobile phones and netbooks, but also tablet PCs that run on Intel’s chip architecture. The SDK provides all the API calls and hooks necessary for developers to compile and begin work on any MeeGo OS platform immediately—and there’s even easy submission of new components and applications for review so that they can be added to the MeeGo app ecology.
Also not to be left behind, Intel has put their eyes on China as a possible development resource. According to an article at TradingMarkets, “Mercedes Ho, a top executive of Intel Asia Pacific Region, reveals when receiving an interview that [a] software shop based on the MeeGo operating system developed by the company will hit the Chinese market next year, selling mobile terminals such as tablet computers and net-books under the operation of local telecommunications carriers or third-party partners.”
According to the article, Intel’s MeeGo may look to compete directly against Google and Apple in the mobile market, which means their investment in China may be their first step towards maturing enough to enter the scene.
