Like the other startups in the crowded Docker container ecosystem, Sysdig Inc. is hard at work building new features that can help set it apart from the pack.

The latest fruit of the company’s efforts is a team management capability for its namesake monitoring service that aims to ease the administration of clusters of containers, which are packages of applications that can run on any computer. In particular, Sysdig is targeting large-scale implementations that include several different services each maintained by different personnel. Such environments are often made up of thousands of individual Docker instances, or runnings of the container, that generate a tremendous amount of operational data.

Sysdig’s new team-based monitoring capability makes it possible to filter the information from a container cluster based on every administrator or developer’s specific area of focus. According to the startup, organizations that use its service can thus kill two birds with one stone and prevent personnel from accessing data that they’re not supposed to while allowing them to find relevant metrics faster. Sysdig sees the feature coming handy in a wide range of use cases.

Large enterprises, for instance, can use the capability to create a customized set of data feeds, dashboards and alerts for each of the teams involved in their internal Docker projects. And an online retailer could limit access to logs from the payment processing component of its containerized website to a handful of authorized personnel. If needed, Sysdig says says that it’s also possible to create a “super-user” group for DevOps staff who require full access to an environment.

The new feature is available in both the on-premises and cloud editions of the startup’s monitoring platform. All plans now support up two teams by default while organizations with an Enterprise subscription can add more on-demand, presumably for an additional fee. Sysdig hopes that the addition will make its tool more competitive against Logentries, Datadog and the numerous other monitoring services out there that also provide Docker support.
