BlackBerry combines acquisitions into enterprise mobile security platform
BlackBerry Ltd. on Thursday launched BlackBerry Secure, which the company describes as a “mobile security platform for the Enterprise of Things.”
BlackBerry Secure is designed to secure the entire enterprise from endpoint to endpoint and brings together the company’s acquisitions of Good Technology, WatchDox, AtHoc and Encription.
Last year saw BlackBerry go on an acquisition spree when it picked up security startup WatchDox in April for between $100 million and $150 million. This was followed by the acquisition of AtHoc Inc., a messaging alerts system in July. The company closed off the year with the acquisition of one its biggest rivals Good Technology for $425 million. Early this year, BlackBerry finalized the acquisition of UK-based cybersecurity firm Encription Ltd.
BlackBerry Secure becomes another step towards the company’s transition into a software company. BlackBerry announced in September that it would stop developing and making its own smartphones and would rather shift its business model towards software and security development.

Here’s a look at BlackBerry Secure, which incorporates various products from BlackBerry’s acquisitions as well as new features:
- BlackBerry Workspaces (formerly WatchDox): a secure file sharing tool that offers embedded digital rights management protection in the files.
- BlackBerry Enterprise Identity: allows users to use Single Sign-on for various third-party cloud services, including Office 365, Box, Dropbox, Workday and Salesforce. While Mobile Zero Sign-on simply requires the unlocking of the phone to grant access to services, without the need for a password.
- BlackBerry Dynamics (formerly Good Dynamics): a development platform and container for mobile apps. BlackBerry Dynamics delivers security at app level to help eliminate the risk of data leakage.
- BlackBerry UEM (formerly BES12): BlackBerry Unified Endpoint Manager (UEM) provides administrators with control and visibility to secure their organization’s endpoint environment. BlackBerry UEM supports all major operating system platforms.
- BlackBerry 2FA (formerly Strong Authentication): does away with a physical token and typing in codes for two-factor authentication (2FA) and rather allows employees to acknowledge a prompt on their secure mobile device.

BlackBerry is also making a portfolio of business-class applications available in January. These include BlackBerry Work (formerly Good Work), Access (formerly Good Access), Connect (Good Connect), Share (formerly Good Share), Tasks (formerly Good Tasks) and Notes.
