How to troubleshoot Windows error codes with Microsoft’s new tool
Microsoft Corp. has introduced a new tool called “Fix Windows Update errors” on its support page that will help users fix update-related errors.
The Fix Windows Update errors tool will be able to assist with common error codes, like 0x80073712, 0x800705B4, 0x80004005, 0x8024402F, 0x80070002, 0x80070643, 0x80070003, 0x8024200B, 0x80070422 and 0x80070020.
If you have ever been presented with one of these error codes, it probably doesn’t make much sense and you will have to sift through Microsoft’s support pages to see how to solve it. Microsoft’s new tool helps identify and resolve exactly what the error is and supports Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Window 7.
Fix Windows Update errors: step-by-step process
Go to the Fix Windows Update errors page and select the Windows operating system that you are currently running: Windows 10, Windows 8.1 or Windows 7.
Note: Windows 8 is no longer supported and you will need to upgrade to Windows 8.1.
Windows 10 users
- Download the Windows Update Troubleshooter > click Open > select Next > follow the wizard steps to find and fix problems with Windows Update.
If this doesn’t work, select “No” and complete the next step in the Fix Windows Update errors tool:
- Go to the Update history page > copy the most recent update KB for your version of Windows 10 (normally found at the top of the list) > search for the KB number on the Microsoft Update site > select the link > click Download (if prompted select Save) > click Open to start the update.
If that still doesn’t solve your error, select “No” again and follow the advanced steps in the Fix Windows Update errors tool.
Windows 8.1 users
- Press the Windows log key (Windows flag key) > type “Network problems” > select “Identify and repair network problems” > follow the wizard steps to diagnose and resolve the network problems > run Windows Update again.
If this doesn’t work, select “No” and complete the next step in the Fix Windows Update errors tool:
- Download the Windows Update Troubleshooter > click Open > select Next > follow the wizard steps to find and fix problems with Windows Update.
If that still doesn’t solve your error, select “No” again and follow the advanced steps in the Fix Windows Update errors tool.
Windows 7 users
- In the notification area, right-click the network icon > select “Troubleshoot problems” > follow the wizard steps to diagnose and resolve your network problems > run Windows Update again.
If this doesn’t work, select “No” and complete the next step in the Fix Windows Update errors tool:
- Download the Windows Update Troubleshooter > click Open > select Next > follow the wizard steps to find and fix problems with Windows Update.
If none of the previous steps worked you will need to reset or reinstall the Windows.
