Converged infrastructure gets … converged: Companies swallow each other as virtualization spreads | #VTUG
When it comes to virtualization, VMware Inc. isn’t the only game in the town. For years technologies like containers and hyper-converged infrastructure have competed with VMware for customers. According to Chris Harney, CTO of CyberNorth and founder of the Virtualization Technology Users Group, the market for virtualization has never been hotter; so who will come out on top?
“Now there are more choices, whether you’re talking cloud, hybrid cloud, hyper-converged. And people need to hear what’s out there to make educated decisions on what to move forward with,” Harney told Stu Miniman (@stu), senior analyst at Wikibon and host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live streaming studio, during the VTUG Winter Warmer 2017.
Harney said that on the security front, network virtualization is garnering a lot of interest. He also stated that customers are very excited to hear what is happening in the cloud with and without regard to virtualization.
Hyper-converged hype
If there is one domain toward which virtualization customers are speeding, it is hyper-converged infrastructure, according to Harney. “Everyone’s hearing hyper-converged,” he said, noting a talk at the conference about customers desiring ways to not manage servers and storage independently.
He also said that one benefit of hyper-converged may be “that you can put storage on compute nodes, but you can’t put compute on a storage node.” However, he added, “I don’t know if that’s true or not — you have some intelligent side of storage.”
Can’t beat them? Merge them
Harney said that HPE’s $650 million acquisition of SimpliVity is a harbinger for the future of hyperconverged. He said that although there are use cases for all of the hyper-converged products out there, they are beginning to overlap, which will lead to more mergers.
“It’s much like wireless was a while ago,” he explained. “We had 15 wireless companies that all got bought up, and everyone had to have their own pet wireless, but they sold. And I think that’s what’s happening in the converged space,” Harney concluded.
