Android Still Ahead of the Pack, Amazon and Intel’s Goals for Mobile

According to this PCMag coverage, there are around 300,000 Android Smartphone activations every day, as Google’s vice president of engineering Andy Rubin tweeted yesterday. Rubin was also at the ‘D: Get Into Mobile’ conference where he displayed a Honeycomb tablet for the first time, as well as the Nexus S Smartphone; additional ‘contributers’ to Android’s success and development.

“Advertising on Android-based phones is a revenue stream for the search giant and, in fact, makes the Android enterprise within Google profitable all by itself, he said…Android has been gaining steam in the mobile OS battle. November data from comScore found that Android nabbed 14.9 percent of the global market in October, a 6.5 percent increase”

Android is certainly getting attention, but not only from its users. Intel, who announced manufacture partners intend to produce 35 Atom-based tablets next year removed Dell from its Android manufacturing partners list, which is now down to 6 others. SiliconANGLE covered here yesterday Intel’s goals around mobile, as the company’s CEO Paul Otellini said at Barclays Capital Technology Conference, as second gen mobile Intel chips are expected to hit the market in H2, 2011.

In related Android news, Amazon has recently released its new SDK for the mobile platform. The SDK includes the following features:

“AWS Android Library—Build mobile applications for the Android on top of APIs that take the complexity out of coding directly against a web service interface. The library provides APIs that hide much of the lower-level plumbing, including authentication, request retries, and error handling.

Code Samples—Practical examples for how to use the library to build applications.

Documentation—Reference documentation demonstrating how to use the SDK.

Credential Management—Protect your AWS account with a number of solutions for managing your security credentials in a mobile application. Learn more solutions in Credential Management in Mobile Applications.”
