Android Apps Overpower Apple’s: Millennial Media MobileMix Report
What’s on your gadget wish list? Probably an Apple product. Looking at Millennial Media’s MobileMix report for November 2010, Apple is dominating the mobile device scene, with the iPhone and iPod touch making up the top two individual mobile devices in its network. From a manufacturing standpoint, Apple has retained its leadership position for well over a year now, despite Android’s rampant growth these past 6-12 months.
Android is still a heavily influential presence, however, tying with Apple for OS market share. Each OS takes just under 40% of the pie, for overall ad impressions within Millennial Media’s network. As far as developers are concerned, Android takes the lead for new platforms they’re looking forward to in the coming year, with Windows Phone 7 following at second place.
Android’s presence is being felt in another way, as smartphones become commonplace for millions of consumers. While the top mobile devices come from Apple’s camp, Motorola and Samsung have high placement in the charts with their respective Android phones. This has been a huge bolster of hope for Motorola and Samsung, as they rebound and even look to 2011 as golden opportunities to produce Android tablets.
RIM also took home a few prizes for their devices, with 5 making it to the top 30 list. Despite the underpinnings of RIM’s decay as a mobile influencer, it’s clear that the market still contains a large user base, meaning it still matters for mobile advertisers.
Mobile apps are becoming more central to mobile advertising, and Millennial Media takes a gander at these trends as well. Gaming apps are unsurprisingly taking the lead in terms of impressions, with music and entertainment following right behind. The newbie category for top apps is automotive, more than tripling their month-over-month growth as more consumers find use in related apps.
As far as apps go across the varying operating systems, Android is a leader here as well. Android apps make up 54% of all apps on the Millennial Media network, with an average growth rate of 10% month-over-month, for the last for months. Apple falls second on this list, with 38% of the market share.
It’s clear that Android is still taking over in various areas, with an emphasis on its advertising prowess. While Apple apps are more numerous and typically of better quality, the expanse of Android’s app Market will show its face when it comes to monetizing the apps and their growing economy.
