Automattic Joins the Growing Market With its Own Wordpress App Store
Looks like Automattic will now build its own WordPress app store. Not bad, especially if they plan on integrating WordPress plugins with Facebook’s vast community as well.
According to Matt Mullenweg, founder of Automattic, they are looking into ways where Auromattic can take plugins like Vaultpress. He said, “Put all of this together and provide more of like a, I don’t want to call it an app store experience, because it’s not that at all, but something which you can drop into your WordPress that adds all this really cool stuff that we build for wordpress.com, so there’s really no difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org in terms of the features you get.”
SiliconAngle Editor-in-Chief Mark “Rizzn” Hopkins has noted that the app store has already been in use for more than a year now, saying, “I think that one could argue that WordPress already has an app store, or several versions of an app store. Plugins and Themes are already integrated downloads, and have tighter integration with the standalone platform than many mobile platforms.”
He added, “Frankly, taking Automattic products and more tightly integrating them into the platform has been their modus operandi for over a year now. While they adopt more and more open standards, they’ve also been on a path to take previously forked projects, and de-fork them back into the main codebase (like WPMU and BuddyPress, for instance).”
This particular route for Automattic may leave some scratching their heads, but a more concentrated effort towards app store integration may be an easier way for WordPress users to access and work with plugins. Creating a portal for one’s own platform is becoming a movement all its own, growing out of niche consumer demands and building around that product. Take Evernote for example: it has an app store front of sorts, which is also a portal for developers to push their products that work on Evernote’s platform. Others like Dropbox are doing the same thing. The common denomenator here? Growing out the public and personal cloud.
